Total Wine & More Announces More Stores Coming to Washington

– by Kendall Jones, Washington Beer Blog

A story in Friday’s Puget Sound Business Journal reports that Total Wine & More plans to open more branches in Washington. (Read the original story.) With one store currently open in Bellevue and another coming soon to Tukwila, the liquor, beer and wine superstore announced that it intends to open at least ten stores across the state.

“Our real estate people say there’s potential for somewhere between 10 and 13 stores for us in Washington state,” said Edward Cooper, vice president for public affairs and community relations. “Who knows, there may be more.”

The Tukwila branch is scheduled to open this Thursday, September 20. The Spokane store will open later this year. Earlier last week, Total Wine & More announced plans for stores in Federal Way, Olympia and Silverdale.

Cooper told the Puget Sound Business Journal that the newly opened Bellevue store has enjoyed phenomenal success since opening. Without providing any specific numbers, he said that the store was on track to rank in the top five among Total Wine & More’s 84 stores nationwide. The Bellevue store offers 1,450 Washington wines, 55 Washington and Oregon spirits and 540 Pacific Northwest beers, along with a beer-tasting bar and growler section with 12 taps offering Washington craft beers.

The introduction of Total Wine & More to the Washington state market is understandably related to the passage of last year’s liquor privatization initiative, I-1183. According to Cooper, ““We always knew privatization was going to be about choices for the consumer. With our mix of choice, low prices and quality service, we knew Washington would be viable for us.”
