Washington brewers have a long tradition of winning awards at national and international beer competitions. Since Bert Grant's first gold medal back in 1983, artisan brewers from the state have garnered over 200 medals. In 2003, beers brewed in Washington took 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO, more than any other state, and swept the Extra Special Bitter category.
