Old Schoolhouse Brewery is located in historic downtown Winthrop, Washington. The brewery and restaurant serves lunch and dinner to accompany its selection of handcrafted beers. Old Schoolhouse Brewery is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Dinner is served Thursday through Monday. Lunch is served on weekends only. With increasing frequency, Old Schoolhouse beers can be found in bottleshops and grocery stores, especially around the Seattle area.
Located along the banks of the Chewuch River, near its confluence with the majestic Methow River, Old Schoolhouse Brewery offers one of the best beer gardens in the state: a large, shaded deck spreading out along the banks of a peacefully babbling river.
Formerly the home of Winthrop Brewing Company, the business was purchased, renamed and renovated in 2008. Following a challenging career working as a safety inspector at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Casey Ruud was ready to pursue something a bit less stressful and a bit less critical. Owning and operating a brewery in a small town seemed to be just about the right speed. Typically, the fate of future generations does not hang in the balance when you are making beer.
In deciding to buy the brewery, Casey Ruud knew that he would be bringing his son Blaze along for the ride. Blaze Ruud is an avid fly fisherman so convincing him to relocate to the Methow Valley was not difficult. With a formal education in science, and some crash-course training in commercial brewing, Blaze took control of the brewhouse and began knocking out excellent beers from the beginning. It is amazing to consider that he began brewing in 2008 and in 2010 took home a coveted gold medal at the North American Brewers Association (NABA) competition. Other awards have followed.
