A Flower For Tacoma - The Art and the Beer
"The most exciting attractions are between two opposites that never meet."
What comes to mind when you think of Andy Warhol? I think of a trend setting New York uber hipster. I think of an artist who was so cool he could express his vision with something so simple as a can of soup. I do not think of Tacoma, WA and I do not think of Harmon Brewing. But wait...
In 1982 the famed pop artists contacted the City of Tacoma with a proposal: Warhol wanted to drape a giant flower over the roof of the Tacoma Dome. It didn't happen. Instead, the contract to beautify the exterior of the Tacoma Dome was awarded to another artist.
Andy Warhol died a few years later but his flowers and his vision for Tacoma did not. Fast forward to the 21st Century. For the past few years, City of Tacoma Arts Administrator Amy McBride has been pondering the possibilities of bringing Warhol's idea to life. Warhol's vision for the Tacoma Dome persists. There is even a Facebook page dedicated to the cause.
This November, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Warhol’s proposal, his flowers and vision for the Tacoma Dome are coming to Tacoma Art Museum. Andy Warhol’s Flowers for Tacoma will run from November 3, 2012 through February 10, 2013.
But what does this have to do with beer? Harmon Brewery in Tacoma just announced the release of Hop Art Ale, an IPA inspired by the pop art of Andy Warhol. This is the fourth time that Harmon has brewed a beer in partnership with the Tacoma Art Museum. Details about the beer and the project are in the press release below.
WARHOL’S POP ART INSPIRES LOCAL HOP ART ALE
HARMON BREWERY AND TACOMA ART MUSEUM BRING BEER AND ART TOGETHER
TACOMA, WA – In 1982, Andy Warhol set his sights on Tacoma with a proposal to drape the Tacoma Dome with a Pop Art flower. Today, those flowers are coming to Tacoma Art Museum and have inspired the local Harmon Brewery to create Hop Art Ale, a special, seasonal IPA to celebrate Warhol’s Tacoma connections. The flower-inspired ale is the fourth seasonal beer that Harmon Brewery has crafted in partnership with Tacoma Art Museum.
“In crafting this beer we took our signature Point Defiance IPA and aged it with rose hips, hibiscus, lavender, and chamomile to tie in with Warhol's love of flowers,” said Pat Nagle, Owner of The Harmon Brewery and Restaurant. “The lavender has a nice presence and each flower does its part to provide the aroma and the taste of this amazing IPA.”
Made with hops and flowers from Washington State, Hop Art Ale can be enjoyed on tap or in bottles at The Harmon Restaurant, The Hub, The Tap Room, and Tacoma Art Museum’s Relish Cafe, while supplies last.
“Warhol believed that everything has its own beauty,” said Stephanie A. Stebich, Director of Tacoma Art Museum. “He saw that beauty in Tacoma, and we are proud to embrace it. Tacoma’s strong ties to art and to the art of craft beer make a perfect combination for our City of Destiny.”
The museum and the Harmon have been collaborating on projects and unique seasonal beers since 1998. Tacoma Art Museum has a long history of connecting the community through diverse art exhibitions, programs, and events. The Harmon Brewery continues Tacoma’s heritage rooted in the art of brewing beer.
