Port Townsend Brewing
– by Kendall Jones, Washington Beer Blog –
The original Port Townsend Brewing Company opened in 1905 and was one of the largest and longest operating breweries of its time. Sadly, like so many other breweries, it closed when Prohibition became law in Washington in 1916. Fast-forward to 1997, when Guy and Kim Sands opened the current iteration of the Port Townsend Brewing Company. The woman wearing the hop crown on the company’s posters is Kim Sands.
Located near the boat yards of Port Townsend, the brewery embodies the town’s character. It is a perfect blend of art and industry—refined and beautiful like a custom yacht, but gritty and hardworking like the hands of a commercial fisherman. The brewery’s beer garden and tasting room attract an eclectic mix of humanity. Whether you are a marine mechanic, a custom jeweler, a boat builder or an attorney, Port Townsend Brewing welcomes you. People from vastly different backgrounds share tables, beers and interesting conversation. It is an institution that embraces the very core of what makes Port Townsend such a special place—its people.
In the warmer, drier months, the beer garden features live music to accompany the delicious brews. Keep an eye on their Facebook page to see who is playing. Year round, the taproom on the other side of the building is bright and inviting. Best of all, you’ll find the full array of Port Townsend beers on tap and waiting for you. They don’t serve food beyond peanuts. Just beer.
