Phil Bannan, one of the owners at Scuttlebutt Brewing, has a simple mantra for living a happy life: never run out of beer. Knowing this, Phil’s wife bought him a homebrewing kit in 1990. It did not take long for Phil to get the brewing bug and after a few short years he wanted to trade in his five-gallon bucket for a 20-barrel brewery. Phil went to work on a business plan and Scuttlebutt Brewing was born. They brewed the first batch of beer on July 4, 1996.

Scuttlebutt Brewing’s pub is located on the Everett waterfront. At the pub, you will find a delicious selection of Head Brewer Matt Stromberg’s creations, along with a complete lunch and dinner menu. Among other deals, happy hour at Scuttlebutt features $2.50 pints.

The actual brewery, not typically open to the public, is across town. Prior to 2007, the brewery itself was located on the waterfront as well, but an inevitable need to expand the brewing operation led Scuttlebutt to find a bigger location. The brewery went from 2,500 square feet to 8,100 square feet—enough room to support future growth. In 1996 Scuttlebutt sold 170 barrels; by 2011 that number had grown to approximately 6,000 barrels.

For about the last 12 years Matt Stromberg has been the man behind the beer. As Head bBewer, Matt has created a number of award-winning brews. Stromberg focuses his attention on the beer and usually lets the brewery’s owners provide a face for his creations.

The Name

Cynthia Barrett’s was born in Norfolk, Virginia where her father was stationed in the Navy. Her mother’s pregnancy was the subject of much scuttlebutt around the naval station. In fact, the gossip was so incessant that Cynthia’s father nicknamed his new baby daughter Scuttlebutt. It was cute for a while, but by the time Cynthia turned 13 years old, she requested (or demanded) that the last syllable be dropped. Ever since, she has been known as Scuttle.
