WA Brewers Win Big at NABA
- by Kendall Jones, Washington Beer Blog -
Washington’s breweries won some impressive hardware at the NABA this year. In all, they brought 23 medals back from the competition (listed below). Washington’s medal haul was down a bit from last year, when our brewers brought home 27 medals, but it is still a damn impressive showing.
This was the 17th year that the North American Brewers Association sanctioned the North American Beer Awards (NABA). The event takes place in conjunction with the Mountain Brewers Festival held each spring in Idaho Falls, ID. The competition provides an opportunity for commercially produced beers to be judged against the best beers in the country. Judging panels are made up of brewers, certified judges, and other qualified beer professionals. The competition is conducted as a single blind sampling followed by rank ordering of the entries within a category. This year the judges evaluated more than 1,400 beers submitted in 82 different categories.
Here are some Washington highlights:
Chuckanut Brewery brought home five medals. At this point, nobody should be surprised. They attract medals like, well, a magnet.
Reuben’s Brews brought home two medals. Not bad for a brewery that is less than one year old. Congrats to Adam Robbings and his crew at Reuben’s. Get used to it. Your beers are awesome.
Black Raven brought home two medals in one category: American-Style Wild or Sour Ale. Show offs. Personally, I am especially happy to hear that the Tri Berry Pie brought home a gold medal. When I tasted that beer, I almost fainted it was so good.
In all, 12 different breweries brought home medals: Boundary Bay Brewing, Black Raven Brewing, Chuckanut Brewery, Flyers Brewery, Ice Harbor Brewing, Icicle Brewing, RAM Tacoma, RAM Seattle, Reuben’s Brews, Silver City, Sound Brewery, and Valholl Brewing.
